Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

Collated (March 2020). Fine-grained clay red in color, the intercolumnia are 7 mm and 8 mm wide on the obverse and on the reverse respectively. Double paragraph lines are very thin and close to each other. Considered that the preserved portion of the left column on one of the faces is uninscribed and assuming that the fragment stems from a two-columned tablet, the curvature would imply that it preserves portions of the lower half of the obverse and of the upper part of the reverse respectively. Whether the third paragraph of the obverse is erased (as assumed in the copy by Ch. Carter) or was left uninscribed is not entirely clear.

Both the content and the handwriting are analogous to KUB 12.2(+) as shown by the presence of the Storm god piḫaimi (iii 3′), the offering of piglets (iii 9′), and the elongated horizontals in the sign UDU (ibidem), but the shape and layout of the fragment imply that it belongs to another tablet (note that the intercolumnium of KUB 12.2 is wider then 1 cm, which is not compatible with that of KBo 26.161). In the cult inventories corpus, this is the only fragment to treat both the “Storm god piḫaimi” (“of splendour”) and Ḫuwattašši (cf. KBo 70.109+ where Piḫami – together with Piḫaimi – and Ḫuwattašši are treated). The Storm god piḫaimi is attested only in KBo 59.69, KUB 38.12, DAAM 1.41, and in the present fragment.
